Our Small Batch model puts real thought behind each piece of the day: playgroups built around who genuinely enjoys each other, handlers working the floor instead of the sidelines, movement balanced against quiet, and individual attention for every dog who walks in. Learning Doesn’t Stop When Play Starts
Practice is baked into every exchange your dog has on our floor.
Holding still at a gate. Backing off so a newly arrived dog can settle. Saying hello to a person without jumping. Turning toward their own name. Hearing another dog say “enough” and listening. Stepping out of play before it tips over the edge. And figuring out that lying down and doing nothing is a perfectly good option.
Our handlers stay in the middle of all of it — marking the choices we want to see again, stepping in early when a redirect is needed, and coaching dogs through the social situations that come up. In practice, that turns an ordinary daycare day into structured dog socialization.

Not Every Dog Belongs in Every Group
Some dogs thrive in a rowdy crowd, some want two quiet friends, and neither answer is wrong.
Temperament, play style, energy level, confidence, body size, social preference, and the friendships a dog has already formed all factor into how we build a group.
Because we deliberately hold group sizes down, we can make those calls carefully, notice the moment a dog needs to step out, and shuffle things as a dog’s needs shift over weeks and months.
Small Batch means the group bends to fit the dogs — not the other way around.

Daycare Built Around a Schedule
A Day That Flows Instead of Fragments
Rather than charging by the hour, we run daycare in set Morning, Afternoon, and Full-Day blocks.
When arrivals and departures happen in defined windows, gates open less often, groups hold together longer, interruptions drop, and dogs get a real chance to find a rhythm and stay in it.

Weekend daycare is available in the Cully Bigs Daycare and Boarding Center. It includes dogs of all sizes.

RCD has different policies in place for daycare and boarding during the holiday periods listed above that all clients who book during these times agree to. Please review the policies below. All reservations during this period are subject to these policies.
Daycare Cancellations

Daycare cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance or will be charged a full rate. Same-day daycare cancellations or no-shows are charged full rate. No-shows exceeding 3 occurrences are grounds for expulsion from all RCD programs.
Daycare During Holiday Period
Daycare will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. Daycare reservations are highly recommended throughout the holiday periods. Outside of these dates, drop-ins for daycare are allowed, but space is not guaranteed.

One of the Hardest Things We Teach Is Doing Nothing
Plenty of dogs know how to play. That’s the easy part.
Far fewer know how to stop playing and switch off — and that’s a skill worth having.
All day long we hand dogs chances to step out of the action, decompress, and rest. The moment a dog chooses to settle without being asked, we make sure that choice pays off.
Nobody here believes daycare has to run at full volume from open to close.
Calm isn’t time away from daycare. Calm is daycare.
Socialization Support
Some Dogs Need a Guide Before They Need a Group

Plenty of dogs walk in without the tools to handle a new social group yet, and we’d never leave one to sort that out alone.
When a Meet & Greet suggests a dog could enjoy Small Batch daycare but isn’t there yet, we may point them toward Socialization Support, our dedicated dog socialization program.
That hour buys your dog a team member whose only job is them. We might start with a single carefully chosen partner or two, open up space when the moment calls for it, shape how greetings and play unfold, reward every check-in, work in breaks, and step back a little further as your dog’s confidence builds.
Playing isn’t the target.
Feeling safe enough to make good social decisions is.
Socialization Support follows an assessment and gets booked straight through our Enrichment Coordinator.
It All Starts With the Right Fit
Before any dog joins a group, we sit down for a Meet & Greet to understand their personality, how they communicate, who they like spending time with, and how they read our building.
A handful are ready for Small Batch daycare from day one.
Others do better starting with Socialization Support.
And a few make it clear that group daycare isn’t their thing at all — which is useful information, not a failure.
We’re not trying to squeeze every dog into our Dog Daycare in Alameda, Portland, Oregon. We’re figuring out whether daycare suits the dog in front of us.

Do you separate big dogs and small dogs?
Our Cully location features two dedicated programs: Cully Bigs for dogs over 30 lbs., and our Little Dog Resort for smaller pups. Also, our Broadway location does not separate dogs based on size. Each of our daycare programs are designed with the dogs’ comfort and safety in mind.
What’s a typical day like for my dog?
Dogs enjoy a mix of active play, rest breaks, enrichment activities, and personalized attention. Each group has its rhythm, depending on the energy level and personalities on display. Rest assured, every moment is supervised by our trained team.
What’s included in a daycare session?
A full day of small group play, socialization, group enrichment, and loving care. We also provide real-time updates through our client app so you can stay connected. One-on-one enrichment and training can be added to any daycare day.
My dog is shy or reactive—can they still attend daycare?
Absolutely. Our Private Socialization Program gently introduces dogs to the daycare environment. Our experienced team tailors each session to your dog’s emotional needs while helping them gain confidence over time.
What’s required to get started?
Every new daycare guest begins with a Meet & Greet, a 45-minute appointment that helps us learn more about your dog’s personality and behavior. It also gives your pup a chance to get comfortable with our space and staff. From there, we build a plan that works for you and your dog.
Meet & Greets are $25 per dog. Once your dog successfully completes their Meet & Greet, the full $25 will be added to your Rose City Dogs wallet and can be used toward any of our services.
Why Alameda Pet Parents Choose Rose City Dogs
Alameda dog owners tend to be the type who already put real thought into their dog’s day — they’re at Wilshire Park‘s off-leash acre on NE 37th before work, walking the ridge stairways on weekends, or making the short hop north to Fernhill Park when their dog needs more room than an acre allows. Grant Park and the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden pull in the neighborhood’s slower walkers, and Beaumont Village along NE Fremont has enough patio space that nobody blinks at a dog under the table. What those same owners run into is the Tuesday problem: a dog with real energy, a workday that doesn’t bend, and a walk that isn’t going to cover it.
That’s where we come in. Our Cully/Alameda facility sits a short drive north of the neighborhood, and the Broadway location is a straight shot down NE 33rd, so a drop-off fits into the commute rather than fighting it. Alameda dogs land in small, deliberately matched groups where somebody is actually watching how the play is going — which is the part that matters when your dog is social but particular, or friendly but easily overwhelmed. Rain is a constant here from October through spring; a covered, supervised day indoors beats a soggy half-hour around the block, and your dog comes home settled instead of restless.
How to Get to RCD from Alameda
For our Cully/Alameda facility, start out toward NE 28th Avenue and keep going east for about nine tenths of a mile — you’ll pass a Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza on your right roughly eight tenths of the way along, which is your cue that NE 42nd Avenue is coming up. Turn left onto NE 42nd and hold that street for another nine tenths of a mile. We’re at 5224 NE 42nd Ave, on the right-hand side. That’s a hair under two miles door to door from most of the neighborhood.
Headed to Broadway instead? Point yourself toward NE Klickitat Street and follow the route about nine tenths of a mile, then turn left onto NE Broadway. A tenth of a mile later, take the right turn and the building is immediately on your left at 2916 NE Broadway — roughly a mile total. Worth remembering that Broadway runs daycare weekdays only; weekend daycare is a Cully program.
